Secure Site Problems

There are many reasons why you may get a 'Page cannot be displayed' error, a blank page or other similar problems when trying to log in to secure web pages ( usually beginning with https:// ) such as online banking, shopping, email services etc.,
Unlike regular (http) web pages, the browser and server must go through a few processes to create a Secure Socket Layer connection (SSL). Briefly, this is what happens:
The browser asks to start a secure session with the server. The server returns the site's certificate. The browser checks the certificate information for validity. The browser creates a session key which is encrypted with the server's public key which is then sent to the server. The server then decrypts this information using its private key. Once both the browser and the server are using the same secret key for encrypting and decrypting their data, their information cannot be intercepted and decoded by a third party.

  Fixes

First of all - Reboot everything! If that doesn't work then continue.....

Test IE's ability to make secure connections by clicking [here]

Shortcuts:
If you are using a shortcut or bookmarked link then try starting from the site's home page as shortcuts store addresses which can change.

Delete Temporary Internet Files:
In Internet Explorer, click Tools / Internet Options, and select the General tab. Under Temporary Internet files, click Delete Files, tick 'offline content' and click OK.

Delete cookies:
As above but choose Delete Cookies.

Check that Internet Explorer Is Using 128-Bit Encryption:
Click Help / About Internet Explorer. Verify that the Cipher Strength is 128-bit. If the Cipher Strength is anything less then 128-bit you may need to upgrade.

Configure Internet Explorer Security Settings:
Click Tools / Internet Options, select the Security tab, and click Default Level.

Verify that Internet Explorer is configured to use SSL 2.0 and SSL 3.0:
Click Tools / Internet Options, and select the Advanced tab. In the Settings box, under the Security header, click to select the 'Use SSL 2.0' and 'Use SSL 3.0' check boxes (if they are not already selected), and then click OK.

Clear the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) state and AutoComplete history:
Click Tools / Internet Options, and select the Content tab, Under Certificates, click Clear SSL State. Click OK when you receive the message that the SSL cache was successfully cleared.
Under Personal information, click AutoComplete, under Clear AutoComplete history, click Clear Forms. Click OK when prompted.

Add to Trusted Sites:
Click Tools / Internet Options, select the Security tab, Select Trusted sites, click Sites, type the address (URL) of the site in the Add this Web site to the zone box, click Add, click OK, and then click Apply.

Check Date and Time Settings on Your Computer Are Correct:
Because SSL certificates have an expiry date, if the date on your computer isn't correct, it may prevent you from connecting to secure sites.

Search for a file named hosts (no file extension - not hosts.sam). When you find it, open with notepad or similar and you will see some entries that look like this. 127.0.0.1 www.somesite.com. Search the list carefully for any references to the sites that you cannot access. If you find any, delete the entry. Save the file and close it.

Check the file integrity of Internet Explorer:
Click on 'start' then 'run', type the following: sfc /scannow (It might ask for the Windows CD to renew corrupted files)

If you have a customised version of IE6, (maybe from your ISP), then this file (regsvr32 urlmon.dll) is often missing. Close all programs, click Start / run and type regsvr32 urlmon.dll, click OK and wait for the 'succeeded' message.

Cryptographic Services:
To verify that the Cryptographic Services service is started, or to start it if it is not already started, Click Start/ Run, type cmd, and then click OK. At the command prompt, type net start cryptsvc, and then press ENTER.

Re-register .dll files:
Close all programs, click Start / run and type regsvr32 softpub.dll , click OK and wait for the 'succeeded' message.
Repeat the above for each of the following:
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 sccbase.dll
regsvr32 slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll

Save typing! Run these commands with a few mouse-clicks. We've put the full set into a simple file. Download it in a few seconds, save it to your computer, choose 'run' when downloaded or double-click the file. [Download]

Firewall:
An incorrectly installed, configured or corrupt firewall can cause this problem. Check all settings in your firewall to ensure it is not blocking secure sites. Disable or even uninstall your firewall, if you can now log in to secure sites then there is a problem with your firewall software.

Routers:
If you are using a router then check that it is configured correctly. Try bypassing the router and connect directly to your modem.

Corrupt User Profile:
Your windows user profile could be corrupt. Try creating a new profile, if you can access secure sites with that then simply delete the old one and continue using the one you've just created.

Browser:
Try installing and using a different browser that does not use any IE files or caches such as our own Square1 Browser.

System Restore:
If your Operating System supports it then try a 'System Restore'. Win ME and Win XP have this as standard.

Proxy servers:
In Internet Explorer click Tools / Internet Options / Connections / LAN Settings. If there is a tick in the 'Use a proxy server' box, untick it and try again. If this does not work or if there is no proxy set, ask your ISP if this is correct and also if they have an alternative proxy setting you can try.
